Dorval’s Annual Photography Contest - 2025 Edition

Dorval in Motion!

The Dorval in One Click! photo contest is all about motions throughout the City of Dorval. The photography should represent movement or change in our environment. Photos can include objects, things in our ecosystem, people and/or animals performing an action or activity. Activate your cameras and show off your creativity!

Here are some examples to inspire you: a kite flying in the air, waves crashing, a jogger, a dog playing fetch!

This contest is open to Dorval citizens of all ages. There are many prizes to be won! Winners could have their photo published in the City's communication tools (cybernews, Communiqué, website, etc.). The winning photos will also be displayed on the outdoor exhibition panels in the Peace Park Arboretum and the Surrey Aquatic and Community Centre.

How to participate

Entries are made online only, by email to photodorval@ville.dorval.qc.ca. Photos must be sent as an attachment along with the necessary forms (specific details below).

Technical specifications and rules

Photos or participants who do not respect these standards will be refused.

• Participants must reside in Dorval.
• All photos must be taken in the City of Dorval and represent a motion.
• Photos must be submitted in JPEG format as an attachment to the email listed above.
• Photographs must be sent in high resolution: minimum of 75 DPI or the equivalent of 1,000 x 500 pixels and a maximum of 300 DPI or the equivalent of 2,400 x 3,300 pixels, in an 8 X 10 horizontal or vertical format. Files must not exceed 12 MB in size.
• It is the participant's obligation to have any recognizable person in a photograph fill out the approval form.

• By submitting a photo, the participant agrees to allow it to be used for promotional purposes for City activities and programs and thus assigns the rights to it.
• If the participant is 17 years old or under, the parent or guardian must authorize the entry.
• The participant must provide the following information by filling out the appropriate dynamic form and returning it to the email address indicated above:
  • Title of the photograph
  • Name of the participant
  • Complete address
  • Telephone number
  • Email address (if different from the sending address)

• Photos submitted must be original works that have never previously won a prize in a contest. Participants must own all rights to the photos they submit to the contest.
• Two (2) photos per person are accepted.Please identify the two files of the photographs with their title.

Selection and photo exhibition

• The photographs submitted to the contest will be posted on the City of Dorval's Facebook page so that the public can vote for their favourite photo. Keep an eye out!
• In addition to the public's grand prize, a jury will select three grand prize winners. The images will be judged on originality, quality of composition and respect of the theme and technical specifications.
• The winners of the contest will be displayed in the Peace Park Arboretum and on the fields of the Surrey Aquatic and Community Centre.
• Prizes won are non-transferable.

Prizes

Winners will receive a gift certificate for a Dorval business of their choice.

• First prize: $150
• Second prize: $100
• Third prize: $75
• Public’s choice: $50

The deadline to submit a photo to the contest is June 8, 2025.

Details

Some birds come and go with the seasons and we don’t have to look any further than our own backyards to observe certain migratory species. One way to make our yards more attractive to migratory and native birds is to incorporate feeders. In this workshop, you’ll creatively re-use a can to make your own hanging bird feeder for the garden!

Interested in ornithology? Come meet the naturalists from GUEPE and discover the birds that inhabit our surroundings. Through various games, you will learn to recognize them and get introduced to the use of binoculars. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., we will also have a free access booth where you can observe and handle naturalized specimens, bones, nests, etc.

In a fun and family-friendly setting, professional photographer Jean Martin offers a practical workshop that introduces participants to the language of photography and various composition concepts. If a picture is worth a thousand words, how do I tell my story?

Come meet our colleagues from the Musée des métiers d’art du Québec to learn a new artistic technique on glass: painted stained glass. Their mediators invite you to explore a whole world of colours and shapes in creating a mandala-shaped stained glass piece. Capture the light in your own way!

This one-on-one course is for people age 15 and under who wish to improve their swimming skills. Every course is personalized according to the skills, strengths, and weaknesses of each swimmer, and lesson plans are adapted to foster progress and results.

In order to respect the physical distancing guidelines, swimmers must be accompanied by an adult swimmer for the first class. Depending on the swimming level of the child, the instructor will inform you whether the presence of an adult in the water is required for the next lessons.

This class will offer a variety of fun physical activities, such as obstacle courses and group games that will allow children to develop their global motor skills and proprioception while having fun.

This Family Zumba class is a unique way to exercise with your young children and other family members who wish to combine movement with music. This class entices you to dance with lots of energy thanks to specially choreographed, child-friendly routines, with music that children love, such as hip-hop, reggae, cumbia, and much more. A 3-basket disc golf course is located at Windsor Park (corner of Dawson Avenue and Fénelon Boulevard). It is available year-round, seven days a week. 

Equipment loan

Discs may be rented, free of charge, at the reception of Dorval Aquatic and Sports Complex (1295 Dawson Avenue) upon presentation of a proof of residence, according to the following schedule:

• Monday to Friday, from 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
• Saturday and Sunday, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The City of Dorval has a beautiful and challenging 18-hole course, which has a driving range, a putting green, a miniature golf course, two reception halls, a bar, and terraces. In winter, there are cross-country skiing and snowshoeing paths, as well as walking paths that also allow for birdwatching.

Due to its prime location on the shores of Lake St-Louis, Dorval can offer its residents a number of nautical activities during the summer.

Lastly, a boat launching ramp is offered to Dorval residents from one of the prettiest bays on Lake Saint-Louis. It is located in Pine Beach Park, at the corner of chemin du Bord-du-Lac–Lakeshore and Saint-Louis Avenue.

As well, the City offers various skating options to its citizens, whether it be outside or inside one of its two arenas.

Combine tennis, racquetball, table tennis, and badminton, and you'll get pickleball, a sport that is becoming more and more popular in Canada.

The hard-surfaced racket is inspired by that of table tennis and racquetball and the holey plastic ball is similar to that used by cosom hockey. Pickleball can be played in singles or doubles, and field sizes are comparable to badminton.

Dorval Municipal Tennis Club

The Dorval Municipal Tennis Club offers its members and their guests 8 clay tennis courts for day and evening play. Members can book courts and participate in round robins, join the interclub, sign up for lessons, clinics, and junior programs, and much more!

All ages and levels of play are welcome. Whether players want a social or competitive experience, there is something for everyone at the club.

Located between Edgar Rouleau Arena and the Walters Aquatic Centre, the beach volleyball court can be used at any time without reservation.

There is exciting news in the world of summer day camps in Dorval! Indeed, starting this summer, the City of Dorval will take over the Dorval Day Camp, which was previously managed by an external organization for many years. By the same token, the activities of the Dorval Kids Klub will be transferred to this new day camp.

This is excellent news for parents, as this reorganization will allow the City to focus all its efforts on a single program and thus offer more day camp spots than in previous years: 216 places instead of 70 places for the Dorval Kids Klub and 80 places for the former Dorval Day Camp!

Location

The Dorval Day Camp will be offered at two locations:

1. At the Surrey Aquatic and Community Centre (SACC - 1945 Parkfield Avenue)
2. At the Edgar Rouleau Arena (ERA - 1450 Dawson Avenue)

Dates and Ages

• June 23 to August 15, 2025 (open on Fête Nationale and Canada Day)
• Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• Daycare service: from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.*

* For all children registering at the ERA, the daycare service is included in the cost. At the SACC, it is possible to opt in or out of the daycare service for Dorval children (lower price for those who do not want the daycare service).

Swimming Lessons and Swim Team

Only at the Surrey Aquatic Centre

If you would like to register your child for weekday swimming lessons or swim team this summer, we ask that you prioritize those offered at 9:05 a.m., Monday through Thursday, to facilitate camp operations.

In addition, you will need to fill out a form and submit it to the SACC supervisor to ensure the presence of the camp’s staff who will accompany the children to their swimming lessons and swim team. The form will be sent by email. Please complete it and return it to cjdsurrey@ville.dorval.qc.ca.

Support Program

A support program, which aims to encourage young people with special needs to participate in the City of Dorval’s summer programming, is offered under certain conditions.
