The City of Dorval is committed to the conservation and protection of the trees on its territory.
As a rule, only trees that are dead, hazardous or cannot be treated may be destroyed. The decision to prune a tree on City property shall be taken by the Public Works Department, and only the Mayor can make the decision to cut down a tree. It is prohibited to damage, to prune or to cut any tree, bush or cultivated plant located along a public roadway, in a public green space or on a public land, including those located on the City's right of way.
For the pruning or felling of a tree on public property, please address your request to Public Works. Information is available by calling 514 633-4046.
Citizens must obtain a certificate of authorization to cut down a tree on their property. An authorization is granted only in certain cases and each tree that has been cut down must be replaced by another one if space allows it.
The work must also be undertaken by a recognized arborist who is registered and approved by the City of Dorval.

Aside from ash trees, a $500 refundable deposit is required for any tree-felling request in order to ensure that the cut-down trees are being correctly replaced. This deposit will be refunded once the inspector validates the presence of a new wide-spread tree.
To request a reimbursement of your deposit, you must send an email to greenline@ville.dorval.qc.ca and include the following information:
Note that your reimbursement request may be rejected if the replacement tree does not meet the criteria stated in the permit.
Tree pruning on private property requires an authorization certificate and must be carried out by a recognized arborist registered with the City of Dorval.

Each year, the City of Dorval plants nearly one hundred trees in roadway setbacks and in parks. Property owners wishing to benefit from the planting program can put in a request. The City asks citizens to water newly-planted trees to help reduce maintenance cost. Planting a poplar, willow or silver maple is regulated everywhere in Dorval and you must first obtain certain information from the Public Works Department. Planting a tree, at a distance of two meters (2 m) from a fire hydrant, a service entrance, electrical wires or a street lamp of public property is also prohibited.
The campaign “Ensemble, on verdit!” allows all resident to plant one or more new trees on their property or to replace a felled tree. It gives citizens the opportunity to purchase trees that comply with Dorval’s regulations through an online platform dedicated to our municipality.
This metallic green-coloured insect accidentally entered North America from Asia. Its larva attacks and kills all native species of ash trees. Since 2002, it has killed millions of ash trees in Canada and in the United States.
Ash trees are usually quite tall and can reach a height that ranges between 15 and 20 meters. They have compound leaves, which can turn from green to yellow in fall, with 5 to 11 leaflets (depending on the species of ash). These leaflets are moderately toothed and may be stalked or sessile. The ash tree also has an opposite branching pattern and can sometimes produce small greenish fruits called samaras.

Unfortunately, the presence of the emerald ash borer can sometimes be very difficult to detect. More so, often times, when signs of the emerald ash borer start showing and symptoms of infestation are visible, the tree is usually already heavily infested and can rarely be salvaged.
Here are some signs of a potential infestation:
Warning: other diseases or insects can cause similar results. It is recommended to hire a specialist to confirm the presence of the emerald ash borer.
As part of its fight against the spread of the emerald ash borer, the City of Dorval has established a financial assistance program to assist its citizens in the costs incurred for the treatment and felling of ash trees located on their property.
The first part of the program is an incentive for the preventive treatment of ash trees whose diameter is at least 30 cm, measured at 1.30 m from the ground.
Citizens eligible to the program will receive a subsidy of 50% of the costs incurred for the inspection and treatment of their ash trees. The City of Dorval reminds everyone that the TreeAzin treatment is the best way to combat the emerald ash borer and that it must be administered before the end of August.
The second part aims to reduce the costs incurred by citizens who must have the ash trees on their property felled due to irreversible deterioration of at least 30%. The trunk must be at least 25 cm in diameter, measured at chest height.
The City of Dorval agrees to reimburse the resident who takes advantage of the program, financial assistance in the amount of $14 per centimetre of diameter. If the actual costs incurred are lower, the resident will receive financial assistance equivalent to such amount. The maximum attribution for each address is $5,000 per 4-year period.
The procedure to obtain the financial assistance is detailed below. You can also contact our Public Works Department at 514 633-4046.
More information on the program
To take advantage of this program, residents must contact the Public Works Department (by email at info.tp@ville.dorval.qc.ca or by phone at 514 633-4046) to indicate their intention to treat one or more ash trees located on their property. An eco-counsellor will then make an appointment with residents to visit the premises to characterize the ash trees and measure their diameter.
Once the tree has been felled, you can officially apply for financial assistance by filling in the application form and sending it by email to greenline@ville.dorval.qc.ca.
In addition to the procedure mentioned above, an eco-counsellor regularly patrols the streets of the City with the aim of identifying damaged ash trees on private properties. If such a tree is found on a land, the eco-counsellor will proceed the following way:
Any tree located on a private property that presents a risk for public safety in part or in whole because of its bad condition will have to be cut, prunned or removed within fifteen (15) days of the reception of an officer's notice. No work shall be undertaken by City staff on private property, except when a tree has fallen in the street.
Trees must be protected during construction work. Therefore, a temporary fence must be installed on the periphery of any tree that will not be cut down. This fence must cover the tree’s branches projection to the ground. In the event that this technique cannot be used, a wood protection must be installed on the trunk and a temporary layer of mulch of at least 20 cm must be spread on the ground to cover the tree’s branches projection to the ground. This second alternative allows the passage of trucks on the construction site.
Visit the Arboretum, located in Peace Park (chemin du Bord-du-Lac — Lakeshore), between the Dorval Library and the Sarto-Desnoyers Community Centre. You will enjoy the diverse collection of more than 250 indigenous and decorative trees. Come and see and touch a Catalpa, a Sorbus, a Pinus, a Picea, a Gelditsia, an Ulmus, a Populus or an Acer. By the way, an Acer, is the latin word for a maple tree and we have close to 8 different species.
Developed in 1995, this site will be the jewel of the West Island in a few years.
You can also adopt a tree in honour of someone or to highlight a special occasion for $400 (taxes included).
