Over the past few years, many people have shifted their focus inward to their homes and immediate communities. That makes this the perfect time to examine our own habits and lifestyles, and reset our intentions.
To be clear, the term “zero-waste” is only a shorthand term for a global waste reduction strategy. It is not expected that the City and its citizens will actually be able to reduce waste generation down to zero. We can, however, rethink what items we bring into our homes.
To help citizens reflect on what actions they can take, every few months, the City will be offering different activities and events under various environmental themes, as well as different levels of actions we can take individually. You are invited to participate in these themed challenges and activities, so that we can reduce our waste production as a community and achieve our Zero Waste targets!
The City of Dorval is pleased to be able to offer its citizens a home energy evaluation kit to help them better understand their home’s energy consumption while also helping them identify ways to save energy in their house.
While not the equivalent of an EnerGuide extensive energy evaluation, this kit will allow you to do your own assessment of your home's potential energy savings.
By taking a few simple and cost-effective actions, you will get a clear picture of your energy consumption and make your home more environmentally-friendly, while reducing your impact on the environment, as well as the City’s. Together, we can make a difference!
Along with a detailed guide and high-level instructions on how to use the tools, the case comprises the following:
Measures the energy demand of an electrical appliance.
Measures the temperature of areas, objects, and surfaces.
Use with the electricity usage monitor to see the difference in energy use compared to a conventional incandescent or compact fluorescent lightbulb.
Measures the amount of light in a room.
Records accurate time for shower or tap flow rate test.
Residents can reserve the toolkit
The user has 3 days to pick up the kit once the reservation notice has been sent.
Please note that there is a specific late fee for this tool, despite the abolition of late fees at the Library.
If, at any point, you require help while using the Home Energy Toolkit or if you would like more advice about conserving home energy, please contact the City of Dorval’s Environment Committee at DorvalEnviro@ville.dorval.qc.ca.

As part of its commitment to reducing the ecological footprint of its activities, the City of Dorval is pleased to provide a guide to event organizers.
Whether you are employees, volunteers, suppliers, or partners, whether your event is big or small, whether it is a festive, cultural, community, or sporting event, this guide proposes concrete actions to reduce the environmental footprint of your activities.
A mini guide was also created for users of municipal facilities who wish to have a summary list of tips for reducing the impact of their gatherings and activities.

Enjoy the summer!
To raise awareness and educate citizens with the aim of improving its territorial performance in waste management, the City of Dorval benefits from a Green Patrol during the summer period.
Starting in late May, two patrollers tour the streets of the City to reach out to residents and businesses in order to provide them with the necessary information to adopt better waste sorting practices. Various information tools will be distributed.
Don’t hesitate to approach these patrollers and ask them questions, notably at the kiosks that are set up during certain summer events organized by the City. In addition to waste management, the Green Patrol also promotes the environmental grants available to Dorval residents and tackles subjects such as the protection of ash trees and the new municipal by-law on pesticides.
It is possible to preserve and to protect our environment by bringing light changes to our everyday life habits. Here are some tips and tricks to be more ecological!
Did you know that it is important to water trees during heatwaves? Young trees and new plantations are particularly vulnerable to drought because their root system is not yet well developed, which disrupts photosynthesis and slows their growth. Mature trees are also at risk because urban soils are often degraded, which exposes them even more to the damaging effects of drought. A watering bag can be installed on young trees while larger trees can be irrigated by letting water flow at a low rate on the root system.
